Harriman was a Democratic activist who served as Ambassador to France during President Bill Clinton's first term until her death in 1997, but was perhaps better known for her social life, which included a number of romantic affairs and three marriages with high profile partners, her first marriage being to Winston Churchill's son, Randolph. In her letter, Harriman thanks Safire for a copy of his latest book, saying she put it on her shelf next to Fowler's English Usage, "a book Winston Churchill always kept close at hand."
