This copy belonged to journalist and language expert William Safire and includes a signed letter from poet Rod McKuen: "Dear William S.: For a long time I've tried to figure out a way of saying thank you for the instruction, information, and pure delight you've given me over the years... I've decided on the enclosed Diary to celebrate your birthday on December 17, the same as you do... You have given me great insight and pleasure not just with your columns but with your books as well." Inside the date book, McKuen wrote "Happy Birthday" in the entry space for Dec. 17 and signed it "Love, Rod."
