First Edition. Very Good / Very Good. Item #5487
Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, 1967. First Edition. Quarto. 489 pages plus 5 page supplement. Signed by author Cassidy on front free endpaper to language maven William Safire with inscription, "Inscribed, with pleasure, for / Bill Safire - / censor facundus, amator linguae - / and a most lively writer! / Collegially - Frederic G. Cassidy / 31 March 80."
A bit oddly, an additional inscription from the author to poet and activist June Jordan has been whited out on the same page, though the text is still visible. It reads, "Given to June Jordan / with pleasure - a / Fellow Jamaican - / FG Cassidy / 2 Dec 88." As this inscription comes after Safire's, we've been unable to explain the two inscriptions, as this copy came directly from the Safire estate.
Graphic dust jacket is worn, chipped, and a bit toned along edges. Green boards with spine stamped in bronze and black. Faded at extremities, binding sound with some separation near top of spine. Date of "Aug 17, 1971" is stamped to front free endpaper, as is Safire's ownership stamp. Pages otherwise clean and unmarked.
