London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1905. First Edition. 16mo; [iv], 179pp. Bound in full leather with gilt lettering to spine and stamped "A.A." initials at bottom front corner. Binder's stamp of Hatchards [Bookshop] at 187 Piccadilly on bottom of front turn-in. Marbled endpapers, gilt top page edges, and ribbon bookmark. Bookplate of F.E. Smith, Viscount Birkenhead on front pastedown. Covers very lightly bumped at corners, with a couple scuffs to joints and fore-edge. A couple pencil marks on front and back endpapers, with contemporary gift inscription on fly leaf "with [?]'s love, December 1905. A few pencil checks in margins throughout. Binding is sound.

This copy most recently from the personal library of author and columnist William Safire. Previous owner Frederick Edwin Smith, 1st Earl of Birkenhead, was a British politician and barrister who served as Lord Chancellor from 1919-1922 and as Secretary of State for India from 1924-1928, remembered for his wit and oratory skills as well as his enthusiastic drinking. He was also among Winston Churchill's closest friends.
