Very Good / Very Good. Item #5880
New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 1977. Second Printing. (The States and the Nation Series). Signed by author on title page with inscription "Reno—To Senator Patrick Leahy—With warmest regards. Robert Laxalt. 1977." Octavo; xiv + 146pp, including index. Two full-page maps: one of 19th-century mining towns in Nevada, one of modern Nevada. Documentary B&W photographs by Joe Munroe in central, 16-page gathering.
Color photographic dust jacket. Gray cloth with crimson title panel on spine and gilt stamping on both spine and front panel, embossed with series device.
Jacket in nearly as-new condition, some slight signs of shelfwear at top and bottom edges. Binding pristine; textblock unmarked, tight, square, and seemingly unread. Central photographs are reproduced in especially high-quality, high-contrast format.
Laxalt's volume for Norton's bicentennial series works hard to counteract the picture of Las Vegas and Reno as the nation's sin capitals by placing them in the larger state context. But Laxalt also, mischievously, highlights the appeal of Nevadan sin safety zones.
