Forty Million Hoofbeats: Factual Story of the 11,356 Mile Trip of Gypsy Queen Under Saddle

Very Good. Item #5882

New York: David Turet Publisher, 1941. First Edition. Inscribed by author on front free endpaper: "To Doctor H.C. Byrd, Frank M. Heath." Octavo; x + 462pp. Front endpaper map of Gypsy Queen's route. Terracotta cloth with gold stamping on front panel and spine. Top edge of textblock stained in same terracotta color.

Binding somewhat soiled; lettering on spine darkened. Remainder of light water stain to bottom of both front and back panels, as well as spine, but no soak-through to endpapers or textblock. Textblock edges tanned. The "Doctor H.C. Byrd" of the inscription is the former president of the Univ. of Maryland, out of whose personal collection this volume trots.

Between April 1925 and November 1927, Washington, D.C. resident Heath rode his longsuffering Morgan bay mare, Gypsy Queen, through every contiguous state in the Union. The journey enjoyed frequent, awed, journalistic coverage, and this volume recounts every clip-clop, stumble, sojourn, and encounter of Heath’s itinerary. Gypsy Queen’s meditations remain unrecorded. A rarity in its vein, and something of a jollity.
