Very Good. Item #5884

Tokyo: The Shimbi Shoin Ltd., 1918. Third Edition. One hundred forty-two full-color plates (originally 143; one now lacking); many plates unfold to double or triple their in-volume format. Folio; pagination continues from Vol III; this volume contains pp. 111-177. The plates and the bound-in, captioned tissues protecting them are not paginated. Total page count around 350pp.

Protected in abstract flower-pattern silk-covered maru chitsu case with bone fasteners. Volume itself bound in caffelatte silk with eggplant binding cords. Front panel has ukiyoye fishing scene imprinted full-size in grisaille directly onto the silk. Textblock top and bottom edges gilded.

Maru chitsu case is soiled, with some foxing, and fraying at corners and folds; joints of case solid; bone fasteners intact. The single excised plate is the first one, No. 104, "Card-Playing in the Ladies Apartments of the Shôgun's Palace." All other plates intact. No misfolds; colors still as published, though underlying paper has undergone even, slight, age-toning. Light foxing throughout on onion-skin text papers and on protective tissues, but plates themselves show very little foxing.

This volume contains masterpieces by Masanobu Okumura, Toshinobu Okumura, Shigemasa Kitao, Masanobu Kitao, Shumman Kubota, Toyoharu Utagawa, Kunisada Utagawa, Hiroshigé Utagawa, Shunrô Katsushika, Sôri Hishikawa, Kyakurin Sori, Hokusai Katsushika, Hokuba Arisaka, and Shinsai Ryûryûkyo.
