Carol Joy Smith was Director of the National Advisory Committee on Black Higher Education and Black Colleges and Universities, an early member of the Coalition of 100 Black Women of DC, and was married to activist Julius Hobson until their divorce in 1966.

Some minor edgewear to the edges of jacket. Bottom spine end of boards worn and one dent near front. Smith's ownership inscription on top and bottom edges of text block, with ownership sticker to front pastedown and front free endpaper. Gift inscription on front free endpaper reads "A gift from Fannie Robinson on Behalf of the Black Writers Discussion Groop at the Church of the Redeemer, 6-92," with "Read May 1996 in Marshall, Texas in pen above. Binding is sound and pages otherwise unmarked.
