Ann Arbor: The University of Michigan Press, 1996. First Edition with full numberline. Octavo; 372pp. Illustrated dust jacket over maroon buckram with gilt lettering to spine. Jacket and back board bumped at top corner, else jacket is crisp with no chips or tears and boards sturdy and square. A few tidy underlines and one page dog-eared, else pages crisp, clean, and unmarked. Binding is sound. Publisher's press release laid in at front.

This copy from the personal library of journalist and language writer William Safire, but with no prior ownership marks. As we have seen in others of Safire's books, one underline emphasizes an interesting phrase (Dickens's "telescopic philanthropy" from Bleak House), and the dog-eared page marks the start of a passage on William Cobbett, one of Safire's favorite "scandalmongers."
