Very Good / Very Good. Item #5938

Cambridge / Boston: The Riverside Press / Houghton Mifflin Company, 1965. Stated First Printing. Signed by the author on front free endpaper with inscription "For Carl Claudy, with best wishes from one who has long admired your sense of humor, your imagination, and your facility with the English language. Walker Lewis."

Octavo; 556pp. Illustrated dust jacket with original $7.50 price intact; book in brown cloth with gilt lettering. Jacket chipped at tail of spine, with a few small tears and adjacent creases along bottom edge. Boards are sturdy and square with light shelfwear. A few instances of marginalia and a couple dog-eared pages, else unmarked. Binding is sound. Photocopy of an article on Lincoln and Taney from The American Journal of Legal History laid in at back.

This copy most recently from the personal library of author and journalist William Safire, with no ownership plates or signatures but with a couple marginal notes in his hand. Dedicatee is not author and New York Herald journalist Carl H. Claudy, who died in 1957, but instead his son, Carl Claudy, Jr., an amateur photographer and trade magazine editor who worked in PR for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Companies, for whom Walker Lewis was General Solicitor. The younger Claudy retired from C&P the year Lewis's book was published.
