Topping's novel is based on the activities of the Office of Strategic Services, who armed and trained guerrillas for combat against the Japanese in 1945, on interviews with Ho Chi Minh, and partially on the experiences of OSS officer A. Peter Dewey. Topping had a long career with The New York Times as a correspondent, foreign editor, and managing editor before leaving to act as secretary of the Pulitzer Prize Board and later to teach journalism at Columbia University.
