Good. Item #5946

Roger Brooke Taney was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1836 through 1864. He was an antagonist of Lincoln, a Southern sympathizer, and, most famously, ruled in 1857 in the Dred Scott case that African Americans could not be considered citizens and that Congress could not prohibit slavery.

From the personal library of William Safire, without Safire bookplate or signature. Safire had laid the documents into the book, along with clippings from rare book catalogs featuring similar documents by Taney, a practice we have seen with other volumes from the Safire collection. Typed description of documents from a previous auction also included.

The autograph documents:

Three documents pertaining to civil cases in Court of Frederick County, Maryland, two undated, the third noted as "filed 15 March 1819." The cases involve false imprisonment and penalty fines.
