New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1846. Stated "Three Volumes in Two." Octavo; Vol I 536pp; Vol II 509pp [+ 9pp of publisher prospectuses bound in]. Brown cloth. Gilt stamped emblem on front panel of both volumes; gilt lettering on spines.
Both spines battered crown and foot, some peeling at joints from vertical tears. Vol II front joint loose but still holding; front hinge cracked but stable. Cloth on both volumes shows water stains that did not soak into boards or textblocks. Initial owner's signature on title page of Vol I; a previous owner's arithmetic in pencil on first blank page, Textblocks of both volumes show light foxing throughout.
Published in original format in London in 1838. Arnold's progeny included the poet Matthew Arnold (son), novelist Mrs. Humphry Ward (granddaughter), and Aldous Huxley (great grandson).
