Very Good. Item #000683
Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1871. First Edition. Octavo; 40pp. Green boards with gilt lettering on spine; title and author stamped within gold surround on front panel. Seven 3/4-page engravings.
Pebbled green cloth scuffed on spine and panels. Crown and foot of spine frayed. Top corners bumped into a slight permanent bend; bottom corners bumped and eroded. Spot of white paint on back panel, about the size of a half dollar. Pages secure and tight in binding. Light foxing throughout, with signs of multiple, but respectful, rereadings.
Six colorful historical anecdotes, verging on the legendary, associated with six prominent New England locations. All retold in a journalistic Hawthornian style, with sensational tabloid(ish) illustrations.
