Written for a composition class when Wolff was a Senior at the University of Michigan and winner of the University's Avery Hopwood Award, the book gained notoriety for its depictions of violence, vulgar language, and incest. The story of a Michigan family nevertheless garnered critical praise as well, and was eventually made into a movie starring Ava Gardner.
