Detroit: Broadside Press, 1972. Stated First Edition, First Printing. Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering. Covers lightly edgeworn with some scuffs to gilt lettering and some general smudging and soiling to face. Front cover opens easily and book opens readily to between a few gatherings, but binding is holding soundly. A few instances of highlighting in first half of the book, but text is perfectly legible. Not an ex-library or remaindered copy. Brooks was the first African American to win a Pulitzer and was the US Poet Laureate from 1985-1986. This is part one of her autobiography, the second part of which would not appear until 1995.
