"I played those six objects like I played the piano—I guess you could say it was a fugal exercise."

New York and New Haven: Whitney Museum of American Art and Yale University Press, 2012. Very Good. Item #10622
ISBN: 9780300185317

New York and New Haven: Whitney Museum of American Art and Yale University Press, 2012. First Edition. Quarto (28.5x24x3cm); xii + 243pp, including chronology, bibliography, checklists, and index. Densely illustrated throughout.

Square-cut thick board panels surfaced with textured paper suggesting a curdly close-up of aquatint—or linoleum. Yellow lettering on spine and front panel. Boards are trimmed flush with the textblock (alla greca, you might say, but post-modernistically); tight-back spine; sewn gatherings. Black stain to all textblock edges.

Boards bowed (front board significantly) and lightly edgeworn; spine cocked. Binding is sound and pages unmarked..

This is the catalog for the Artschwager exhibit held at the Whitney in New York City from 25 October 2012 to 3 February 2013, and traveling afterward to the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. The exclamation mark doth protest too much, methinks—but Artschwager's importance is real in late 20th-century Conceptualism and Minimalism, and that importance paired with the signature exclamation mark took him to the Biennale in Venice.
