Mark Rothko [Essays and Paintings]

Near Fine / Near Fine. Item #10729

Basel: Galerie Beyeler, 1990. Quarto (31x25x0.5cm); unpaginated [32pp]. Eleven full-page color plates with a full-page portrait on first page. Rothko's essays and meditations on his work are printed in both English and German.

Illustrated stiff card wrappers reproducing a Rothko on the cover, over sewn gatherings of heavy cream stock. The imprinted acetate dustjacket with Rothko’s name—our photos show the book both with and without—has deep flaps. Both jacket and volume are impeccable, As New. The jacket shows some tightening with age, resulting in very minimal curling at the volume fore-edges; something typical of acetate jackets. One micro-tear to upper right corner of jacket flap fold, but no signs of yellowing.

This volume is the catalog for the Rothko exhibit at the Galerie Beyeler held from November 1990 to January 1991.

The Galerie Beyeler in central Basel/Bâle was the forerunner of the Fondation Beyeler museum, now in its handsome Renzo Piano building just north of Basel in Riehen. Since we are rare and antiquarian book dealers, we possess the Divine Right to tell you that the Galerie Beyeler was born as Oskar Schloss’s print and antiquarian bookstore, “La Librarie du Château d’Art,” at the address associated with the publication of this volume in Basel. Schloss, a refugee from Nazism, hired young Ernst Beyeler in the early 1940s; Beyeler became enamored of prints and art, and eventually took over the bookstore, expanding it into the famous art venue that housed this and countless other major exhibits. The business and the art holdings moved to the new Fondation Beyeler building in Riehen in 1997. Where Rothkos continue to float within its walls.
