First biography devoted to Ulric Dahlgren (1842-1864), the young Union colonel known for leading the failed Kilpatrick-Dahlgren Raid on Richmond during which Dahlgren was shot and killed. Papers found on his body included orders made to not only raid Richmond, but also torch the city and assassinate Jefferson Davis and his cabinet. The subsequent publication of the papers throughout the Confederacy brought about violent public outcry and Dahlgren's body was even exhumed and desecrated.
