ISBN: 3888144256

Munich: Edition Heiner Bastian bei Schirmer/Mosel, 1991. First Edition. Quarto (28x24.5x1cm); unpaginated [88pp]. Thirty-eight full-page color plates. Text in parallel German and English. Pictorial dustjacket; white boards with silvery-gray spine lettering. Jacket shows very faint beginnings of yellowing at top and bottom edges, with a touch of shelfwear. Boards bowing a bit at fore-edge. Binding is sound and pages unmarked.

"Letter of Resignation" is one of Twombly's most famous series, undoubtedly because there's a conceptual connection between his calligraphic ferocity and the emotional associations of the title. Most of his titles are less decipherable, or, to follow his metaphor, legible.

This volume, independent and complete in itself, is the third in a series published under the Heiner Bastian specialty imprint with Schirmer/Mosel. Bastian is a poet and critic who has written frequently on Twombly and Joseph Beuys, and is a lead contributor, with Nicola del Roscio, to the catalogue raisonné of Twombly's work.
