Nielsen worked on the series of paintings for Fairy Tales for a decade. As noted in "Kay Nielsen: An Enchanted Vision" by Meghan Melvin, the illustrations, while "suggesting the influence of Chinese paintings, and the delicately tinted borders that recall the ornamentation of Persian and Indian art -- are a celebration of Han Christian Andersen and the Danish heritage he and the artist shared." [Melvin p. 95].
