Detailed overview of the history and activities of the New York State Colonization Society, founded in 1829 masquerading as a humane answer to the growing abolitionist movement. The Society, part of the greater Colonization movement, raised funds for the establishment of the colony of Liberia, in Africa, to which they assisted in the displacement of free African-Americans. Thousands were sent, fewer than half surviving by 1843.
