Large quarto; later half navy blue goat over cloth, gilt spines in six compartments, top edges gilt, new endpapers, original cloth bound in rear, housed in matching slipcase; xxiv,524pp.; illus. throughout, many full-paged. A hint of scuffing to leather along spine margins, light 2” diameter dampstain with just a bit of color bleed to final leaf of text mirrored by similar flaw to rear cloth cover bound in rear, else Very Good to Near Fine, rather superlative.

Uniquely extra-illustrated with eleven mounted color plates (with printed tissue guards) by Harry Clarke from his first book, also an early 20th century edition of Andersen's fairy tales first published by Brentano's in 1916. Clarke went on to illustrate works by Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Perrault, and Algernon Charles Swinburne, as well as designing more than 130 stained glass windows in the Arts and Crafts style.
