Octavo; publisher's decorative paper-covered boards designed by Colette Duhamel, gilt-lettered spine; 722pp. Boards a bit scuffed with shallow exposure along extremities, endpapers toned, later ownership signature to front free endpaper, else a Very Good, still quite sturdy and attractive copy overall.

Second edition of Sartre's monumental philosophical oeuvre, Being and Nothingness, originally composed and published under the Nazi occupation during which Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir (the "Castor" to whom this book is dedicated) endeavored to write and keep warm while also avoiding German officers and tourists, first at the Café de Flore, then Les Deux Magots, and then back to the Flore.
