Collected humorous pieces by the Canadian right-wing politician and author Thomas Chandler Haliburton (1796-1865) first published in the Novascotian newspaper, the popularity of which led to multiple printings in book form. However, as Richard A. Davies notes in his short biography of Haliburton for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, "His use of offensive stereotypes in his caricatures of black people...goes well beyond the ethnocentrism of the age, and his portrayal of women is unenlightened...His reputation has never regained the peak it achieved in his lifetime."
