Important first-hand prison diary of a Virginia-born prisoner held at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC, during the Civil War. The author was arrested on January 31, 1863, at the bookshop at which he worked as a printer on the corner of 7th Street and Pennsylvania. Williamson had recently traveled south to Richmond and then failed to report to the military authorities upon his return. When asked to take an oath of allegiance to the Government he refused. He was subsequently jailed as a "suspicious" person for two months.
