Germantaun, PA: M. Billmeyer, [1825]. Small quarto (20cm.); original stitched pictorial wrappers; unpaged; woodcut illus. in text which is printed within typographically decorative border and double rules. Upper wrapper (often missing) illustrated with an elaborate full-page woodcut depicting a dock scene, with a European and an Oriental person about to be joined by a third man arriving from a dinghy, a port town lying just beyond them. The sky shows day transitioning into night with Mercury hovering between the sun and moon holding a banner that reads "Hoffnung besserer Zeiten" [Hope for Better Times]. Several losses to upper wrapper extremities touching text and image with some minor loss (but no loss of meaning); text uniformly browned and spotted, contemporary ownership signatures to rear cover. Lacking the leaf depicting the full-page woodcut "La Fleche." Text includes German-American folk medicine. SHOEMAKER 20918.
