Later edition of the epistolary giant's work of political philosophy, first published in 1796 in the wake of the French Revolution. The work went through a myriad of editions over the next twenty years and greatly impressed such contemporary luminaries as Alexander von Humboldt, Friedrich Schiller, and Goethe (see Martin Thom, "Republics, Nations, and Tribes" (1995), pp. 48-9).
