The Captives of Abb's Valley, a Legend of Frontier Life

Philadelphia: Presbyterian Board of Publication, 1854. Very good. Item #25167

Philadelphia: Presbyterian Board of Publication, [1854]. Reprint? 18mo; vii,[8]-168pp.; woodcut frontispiece, two leaves of plates, additional text illus. throughout. Minor scuffing to cloth extremities, sizing a bit spotted, spine a shade toned, contemporary ownership signature of a Virginia Earle to front flyleaf, else a Very Good copy, bright and sound. Presumably a stereotype reprint, the text often broken, most noticeably on title page. Contemporary note written on verso of Mrs. James Caxpinter Cobey's calling card laid in: "Loaned to me by my sister. Hope you'll enjoy it. E.K.C."

Account of young Mary Moore and her family's capture by the Shawnee in Northwestern Virginia (modern West Virginia) in 1786. "They were not treated with cruelty," according to the narrative. However, a party of Cherokees passing through the Shawnee village in which they were held put Moore's mother and sister to death, only Mary and fellow captive Martha Evans managing to escape. Attributed to Moore's unnamed son, the text reads like a children's religious tract, unsurprising for the imprint.

See Sabin 10767, which calls for 169pp.
