London: C. Chappel, 1811. Very Good. Item #25206
London: C. Chappel, 1811. "Considerably Altered and Enlarged." Octavo (23.5cm.); publisher's paper over drab boards, contemporary manuscript spine label; viii,pp. (A4 B-P8, collation complete). Boards a bit scuffed and front joint starting to crack, paper flaw at spine crown, faint damp staining to board fore-edges not bleeding into textblock, lacking George Cruikshank's frontispiece as is often the case; overall a Good to Very Good copy, half title bound in.
Largely expanded edition of Captain Francis Grose's work first published in 1785, this edition including "the modern changes and improvements, by a member of the Whip Club. Assisted by Hell-Fire Dick, and James Gordon, Esqrs..." The work gets us from Abbess, "A bawd, the mistress of a brothel" to Zucke, "A withered stump of a tree."
