Galassi's letter, hand-written on 8.5" x 5.5" MoMA letterhead and apparently initially accompanying an unbound proof copy and transferred to the bound one when it became available later, reads: "11 June 1996 / Dear Bill Safire -- We won't have bound copies until shortly before the exhibition opens, but I thought you might want to see the book in this form. I really can't thank you enough for your contribution to the book, but I look forward to trying the next time I see you -- perhaps at the breakfast preview of the exhibition on Wednesday, June 16, 8:00 to 11:00 A.M. With great thanks and best wishes, Peter Galassi."
