London: Michael Joseph Ltd., [1939]. First Edition. Thick octavo; publisher's cloth in black decorative dust jacket retaining original price (8/6); 651pp. Jacket extremities rather rubbed with a few small chips and closed tears, red and green titling to jacket spine panel a bit sunned, cloth corners bumped, textblock edges a bit foxed and soiled, contemporary ownership ex libris to front pastedown, else a Very Good, internally clean and sound copy, nicer than frequently encountered.

The British author's most famous work of fiction, a historic novel set in a poor mining community in New South Wales. The work was quickly adapted into the 1941 film, directed by John Ford, which famously beat out both "Citizen Kane" and "The Maltese Falcon" for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
