Rebacked leather with gilt lettering and red title cards. Covers bumped at corners and rubbed along edges, with some toning and darkening to leather along edges. Vol II missing one title band overs pine, and shows a small sticker shadow on front. Bookplate of Archibald Hamilton on front pastedown in each volume. Bindings are sound and pages unmarked.
Lengthy letter from Professor Virgil B. Heltzel on Northwestern stationery laid in at front, in which he discusses the bookplate and hopes the recipient can pin down which Archibald Hamilton the set previously belonged to. This First Edition of Southey's biography was printed in a run of 3000 copies, and appeared the same year he became Poet Laureate.
