First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good / Very Good. Item #4827
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1995. First Edition with full numberline. Signed by the author on front free endpaper to fellow writer and former presidential speechwriter William Safire with inscription: "To Bill Safire, with admiration for your work as a journalist, as a language maven, & as a historian. David Herbert Donald, 5 Oct. 95." Octavo; 714pp. Illustrated dust jacket with original $35.00 price and embossed lettering to front; book in red paper-covered boards with blue cloth spine and silver lettering. Jacket and boards bumped at corners and spine ends, with a small paperclip indentation at top front of jacket. Boards otherwise clean and sturdy. Back hinge a bit sprung. A few pages dog-eared at corners, but crisp and unmarked. A 1995 New Yorker review of the book by John Updike is clipped and laid in at middle, leaving a bit of a gap in gutter before Chapter 17, but binding is holding soundly.
