Ornate red publisher's cloth with gilt and black ornamentation, mounted floral illustration, and beveled edges. Gilt page edges. Covers shelfworn with bumping to corners and spine ends and splits just starting to joint at top back. Spine a bit rolled. Hinges cracked with mesh exposed. Pencil notes on front free endpaper; back free endpaper missing. Some foxing throughout, heavier to preliminary pages and on tissue guards. One or two stray marks in text. Opens easily to between a few gatherings, but binding holding. This copy from the personal library of author, columnist, and speechwriter William Safire, with his bookplate on front pastedown.
