First Edition. Very Good / Very Good. Item #5359
ISBN: 1400042364

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2004. Stated First Edition. Signed by the author on full title to writer and columnist William Safire with inscription "For Bill -- With affection - from a grateful "sleeper" - Bea." Additional signed handwritten letter to Safire laid in at back.

Octavo; 284pp. Illustrated dust jacket with original $25.00 price; book in red and black paper-covered boards with gilt lettering to spine. Jacket lightly shelfworn but with no chips or tears. Boards are sturdy and square. Occasional underlining throughout, with a few notes on back free endpaper (a couple with page numbers for "Godwin" and "Mary W," in keeping with Safire's interest in Mary Wollstonecraft, William Godwin, and their daughter Mary Shelley). Binding is sound.

Himmelfarb's book was predicted as a "nonfiction sleeper" for the year in Safire's "Office Pool, 2004" column. In the additional, undated letter she briefly expresses praise for a recent piece of his in the Times, saying she and her husband Irving [neoconservative founder Irving Kristol] thank him.
