The Story of the Rear Column of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition

C. Whymper. Very Good. Item #5452

New York: United States Book Company / John W. Lovell Company, [1892]. Stated Authorized Edition. Octavo; xxxii + 455pp + plus two-part pasted-in three-color fold-out map of the Congo river, each part 29" long, forming the continuous route Jameson took. B&W line drawings and photo illustrations by C. Whymper throughout; facsimile letter from Tippu Tib; three natural history appendices. Olive cloth binding with four-color gilt and silver pictorial stamping. Small 1/2" stain (with faint signs of removal attempt) on spine; slight fraying to upper and lower spine edges. Slightly bumped lower corners; some general smudging and soiling to back. One part of the two-part map is split because of a longstanding misfold, but complete and reparable; second part of map nearly pristine.Split front hinge, but no loosened pages. Previous bookseller's stamp at bottom of front pastedown.

An account of Jameson's ancillary expedition in the train of H.M. Stanley, both fascinating and repellent because of its undisguised racist and colonial presumptions.

Price: $80.00
