New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 1994. First Edition. Signed by editor Liu on title page to William Safire with inscription, "To William Safire - / Whose words and / wit inspire - / Eric Liu / 8/94." Additional typed letter signed from Liu to Safire laid in. Letter is dated August 25, 1994, and reads in part, "Dear Mr. Safire: / I am a former White House speechwriter (I worked at the NSC with Jeremy Rosner), / and as long as I have been writing professionally, I've admired your work... / I hope you enjoy the book, and I hope I have a chance some time to talk with you / about how someone like me might go about writing for a living. I'm starting law / school at Harvard next month, but I expect to be in New York pretty often. / With best wishes, / Eric Liu."
Liu went on to found Citizen University and co-author two books on patriotism and progressivism.
Octavo; 336 pages. Illustrated dust jacket with original price intact. Book in white speckled paper-covered boards and gray cloth spine with black lettering. Jacket creased along edges, with some rubbing and light toning and smudging to front and rear panels, more heavily on jacket interior. Boards are square with nudging to spine ends and light bumpin gto bottom corners. A couple small spots to page edges at fore-edge, but interior is clean and unmarked. Binding is sound.
