Very Good. Item #5559
Leipzig: Karl Baedeker, Publisher, 1898. Third Edition, Revised and Augmented. 16mo; cxviii + 472pp. Twenty three-color maps; 48 plans of cities and monuments; central engraved panoramic fold-out of Jerusalem. Classic Baedeker binding in red cloth on limp boards with gilt lettering, front and spine; marbled textblock edges. Traditional green Baedeker ribbon bookmark.
Binding soiled; spine darkened. Spine cloth frayed and missing 1/4" at crown; frayed at foot. Front free endpaper and half-title page detached but present; half-title has currency table on reverse. All panels of the central Jerusalem panorama are present but two panels are detached neatly along accurate original folds. Same is true for final map of routes through Syria. All other maps present and none misfolded.
Volume is now particularly enlightening--and moving--for its descriptions of major classical, hellenistic, and medieval monuments still extant in 1898, but now lost to the barbaric violence of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
