Very Good. Item #5669
London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1783. "A New Edition;" First Octavo Edition; Six Volumes; I: xiv, 456pp; II: xv, 496pp; III: viii, 412pp; IV: viii, 443pp; V: vii, 432pp; VI: viii, 420pp. Frontispiece and two fold-out maps to vols. I and II. Originally published in three quarto volumes, here published into six. Gibbon would later expand his work into twelve volumes. This work ends with a chapter on the reign and conversion of Clovis, on the Visigoths, and the Saxons.
Contemporary tree calf boards ruled in gilt; 20th century full leather reback and tips renewed with brown and black labels and gilt decoration to spine. Some loss of leather to boards also repaired. Endpapers are stained along edges, and signs of repair at joints. Some pages are dog-eared, but overall a handsome early edition of Gibbon's opus.
