Very Good. Item #5670
New York: Subscription Book Department of The American News Company, 1879. First Edition. Two Volumes. Quartos; 631, 631 pages. Frontispiece of Grant with tissue guard; over 800 additional black and white illustrations. Lacks fold-out map. Half calf with gilt decoration and brown and red title labels to spine, volume 1 having one label darker than volume 2. Marbled boards, edges, and endpapers.
Young was invited to accompany Grant on his famous world tour, and so impressed the former President that he gained a position as Envoy to the Qing Empire under the Arthur administration, and later became the 7th Librarian of Congress.
Heavily scuffed boards and roughly worn along along extremities. Some loss of leather in spots, and corners bumped and cracked, but binding is sound and pages unmarked. Front free endpaper of volume 1 shaky but holding. Two pages of bookseller catalogs laid in at rear of volume one, presumably by Safire as that was his habit when researching his books. Overall, a sound copy from the estate of author and Presidential Speechwriter William Safire.
