Very Good. Item #5703
London: Nathaniel Cooke, 1854. Four volumes. Octavos. Black and white illustrations. Blind-tooled plum cloth is faded at spine and edges and worn at spine ends. Fourth volume dampstained across top front, with stain continuing along top of front endpapers and half title, but disappearing by the full title page. Some inoffensive markings to endpapers and markings to text blocks. Bindings are sound.
Johnson's famous 'Lives of the British Poets' was published in the late 18th century, and inspired others to edit, expound upon, or 'complete' it for decades after. Hazlitt's effort grew to these four volumes and expands upon the 52 authors included in Johnson's original.
