Very Good. Item #5761

New York: J.M. Stoddart & Company, 1887. First Edition. Large octavo; [ii], 707pp. Three plates including portrait frontis with tissue guard and eight maps (three folding), all present. Contemporary leather (sheep?), rebacked with newer brown leather spine and black spine label with gilt lettering. Marbled endpapers and page edges. Boards rubbed and bumped along edges, with abrasions, scuffs, and some general smudging to older leather. Boards bowed a bit at fore-edge. Hinges reinforced. Contemporary caligraphic ownership inscription of T.A. or F.A. Rowett dated May 3rd, 1887 on verso of fly leaf, with light offsetting opposite. Clean tear to largest fold-out map where attached, but with no loss. Other maps are crisp with no tears. Binding is sound and pages unmarked.

Nevins notes the book is "uncritical and superficial, with heavy emphasis on the military campaigns; by a former Confederate officer who served on Lee's staff." [Nevins II-73].
