Very Good. Item #5777
Delhi: Atma Ram & Sons, 1962. Presumed First Edition in India, stated "Cheap Edition." Signed by Bowles on half title. Octavo; xxiv + 351. Royal blue leather with beveled edges and rounded corners to boards and textblock. Gold lettering on spine. Textblock continuously gilt on all edges. Bound-in ribbon bookmark in unusual red, white, and blue weave.
All gilding bright. Leather still glossy, but with some scratches; nicks to bottom edges; 1" peeled patch on back panel (perhaps from previous price sticker); small yellow stain (?paint) at lower corner on back panel. Textblock clean, unmarked, and tight in binding. Despite being the stated Indian "Cheap Edition," this scarce volume is elaborate by Euro-American standards, and features binding and presentation characteristics associated with gift or tribute Bibles.
Bowles served twice as ambassador to India during a long political and diplomat career which included important financial roles during the Second World War and a later position as governor of Connecticut. He formed a close relationship with Jawaharlal Nehru, which may explain both the elaborate nature of this "Cheap Edition" for India, and the fact that Bowles signed it. A find.
