Additional fifteen small woodcuts as chapter head-pieces. Black cloth with red paper inset labels on spine and front panel; front panel inset is woodcut portrait of heroine.
Missing dust jacket. Spine frayed crown and foot; very slightly rolled. Panel corners bumped with minor erosion. Nick to top edge of front panel. Textblock evenly tanned but clean, unmarked, and tight in binding. Faint foxing to first four and final ten pages. Ink signature of previous owner on half title.
The setting for McNeer's novel of a young girl falsely accused of witchcraft--echoing many of the issues from both the Salem Witch Trials and Hawthorne's "Scarlet Letter"--was inspired by the sixteen months she spent in Eastern Europe and Germany between the two world wars.
Lynd Ward, McNeer's husband, was one of the first practitioners of what would come to be called the "graphic novel," publishing six such works, done entirely in woodcut, from 1929 to 1937.
