Very Good / Very Good. Item #5879
New York: Delcorte Press / A Seymour Lawrence Book, 1966. First Edition. Signed twice: "For Ann with best wishes, Bill" [opposite title page]; "William Jay Smith" [title page]. Octavo; x + 68pp. Metallic silver coating on dust jacket. Charcoal cloth with silver spine stamping. Top of textblock stained black; deckle-cut fore-edge.
Unclipped jacket has two small tears at top of spine; the silvery coating is scuffed, chiefly on front surface; signs of general shelfwear. Cloth is as new. Tiny brown stains on two deckle-cut fore-edges. A Christmas card for 1970 with one of Smith's poems—"Hull Bay, St. Thomas"—handsomely printed on laid paper, is inserted, inscribed "Greetings from Suja & Bill." Smith was the U.S. Poet Laureate from 1968 to 1970, the first Native American to receive that honor.
