Small octavo (7.25" x 5"); xvii, 289pp (final page numbered 139 in error) + 1pp errata, [3-5], 6-248pp. Full textured leather with gilt border, elaborate gilt decoration and red title card to spine, gilt ornamentation on leather turn-ins, marbled endpapers, and gilt page edges. Binding signed "J. Wright, Noel St."on verso of front free endpaper. Boards lihgtly bumped at bottom corners with a few scuffs down joints and a few stray scratches to surface. Boards open easily but binding is secure. Pages clean and unmarked.

This copy from the personal library of journalist and language writer William Safire, with a few New York Times post-it notes marking three passages. On the post-it marking the phrase "extremis digits attingere" Safire has written "Touch only with the finger tips."
