New York: The Viking Press, 1941. Two Volumes. First American Edition. Octavo. 629 pages; 630-1181 pages. Map endpapers; black and white photographs.Illustrated dust jackets with $7.50 set price intact on each; books in black cloth with color illustrated vignettes to front. Lacking slipcase.

Jackets are lightly chipped at edges and toned along spine. Large tear tracing halfway down spine of volume one towards rear panel, continuing horizontally along length of spine. Ghosts of stickers to front panels, leaving glue residue and superficial abrasions to paper from removal. Boards a bit shelfworn, with spine lettering dulled. Previous owner's name dated 1941 at top of front free endpapers. Pages 197-200 detached but present in volume 1, with pages 863-866 the same in volume 2.

A sound set of West's masterpiece, which leads with the dedication, "To My Friends in Yugoslavia, / Who Are Now All Dead or Enslaved."
