Two Octavo Volumes. 521 pages + Index; 418 pages + Index. 28 black and white plates (2 in volume one; 22 in volume two) portraying the government, military, and sports of Ancient Greece. Full speckled calf gilt tooled with labels and gilt decoration to spine.

Boards are moderately worn at edges and at spine. Corners bumped and exposed, worn along spine with labels chipped and title label lost entirely to volume two. Cracked at joints with signs of repair. Front board of first volume still barely holding with tape repair to hinge. Bindings otherwise holding. Interiors with some spotting and otherwise sound.

Volume one covers the civil government of Athens and the religion of Greece. Volume two explores the military affairs with many interesting plates covering military formations and strategy, and concludes with various customs such as funeral arrangements and entertaining strangers.

Set from the personal library of journalist William Safire, acquired from his estate, but with no ownership marks or plates.
