Additional signed, handwritten letter laid in on L'Alberone letterhead reads, "I'm sorry this is only a reprint of an old book but the original doesn't exist any more. Jane."

Octavo. 347 pages. Navy boards with gilt lettering to spine. Lacks dust jacket. Light edgewear. Binding sound. Some toning to preliminaries but pages otherwise unmarked.

Clark was a professor at Barnard College. In the years leading up to the publication of the first edition of this book (1938) she actively corresponded with Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Cardozo, to whom this book is dedicated.
